Boat Storage Tips for Texas Boat Owners

Texas is one of the few states where boating season never really ends. Lake Travis, Lake Conroe, Lake LBJ, and Galveston Bay alone give boat owners thousands of acres of water within a short drive of most major cities, and mild winters mean many boats see water ten to twelve months out of the year. That also means more time sitting between trips and more exposure to heat, UV, and coastal humidity.

Storing a boat correctly between trips protects your investment and makes it significantly easier to get back on the water when you are ready. Here is what to know before you store.

Before You Store: Getting Your Boat Ready

How you prep your boat before storage matters as much as where you store it. Skipping these steps can mean engine damage, mold, or hull deterioration that is expensive to fix.

• Flush and drain the engine. Run fresh water through the engine to clear out salt, sediment, and algae, especially if you have been on Galveston Bay or the Gulf Coast. Residue left in the cooling system corrodes over time.
• Stabilize or drain the fuel. Fuel left sitting for months breaks down and gums up the carburetor. Either add a fuel stabilizer and run the engine for a few minutes to circulate it, or drain the tank entirely.
• Remove and store the battery separately. Batteries left in hot conditions through a Texas summer will not last. Pull it, top off the charge, and store it somewhere climate-controlled. Hook it to a trickle charger if you plan to leave it for more than a few weeks.
• Clean and dry the hull and interior. Any standing moisture left in the bilge, cooler, or upholstery will grow mold. Scrub the hull, wipe down all surfaces, and leave any drain plugs out so water can exit.
• Cover it properly. Texas UV is intense, and an uncovered boat sitting in the sun for four months will show it. A fitted cover protects the upholstery, the gelcoat, and any electronics left on board.

Choosing the Right Storage Type

Boat storage in Texas generally comes in three formats, and the right one depends on your budget, your boat size, and how much you care about UV and weather exposure.

• Enclosed indoor storage. Maximum protection from sun, rain, and hail. Best for newer boats, fiberglass hulls, or anything with electronics you want to protect from temperature swings. If you store in a climate-controlled unit, your battery and upholstery will thank you.
• Covered outdoor (canopy) storage. Protection from direct sun and most rain without the cost of an enclosed unit. A solid middle-ground option for boats with quality covers already in place.
• Open outdoor storage. Lowest cost. Fine for shorter storage periods if your boat is properly covered and you are not in a coastal humidity zone. Less ideal for boats stored through multiple Texas summer months.
